Transfer of Property Title
A transfer of title is the legal process of changing ownership of a property from one person, or entity, to another. This usually happens when a property is bought or sold, but it can also occur when property is gifted, transferred between family members, or moved into or out of a trust or company.
During a title transfer, the ownership details recorded with the land registry or titles office are updated so the new owner is officially recognised.
When a Title Transfer May Be Needed
A property title may need to be transferred, outside of a sale or purchase, when:
- Property is gifted to a family member
- Ownership changes after a relationship breakdown
- Property is transferred as part of a deceased estate
- Ownership is moved into or out of a trust, company, or SMSF
